New York, NY -- Ben Lovett has composed and scored a variety of independent films including "The Signal" which premiered at Sundance in 2007 and received the award for Best Score at the 2009 Brooklyn International Film Festival for "The Last Lullaby". With an extensive background in film music, Lovett's own original songs naturally possess the same kind of lush, visual translation as his previous artistry. "Eye Of The Storm" is the first of a thunderous series of 9 cinematic music videos - one for each track on Lovett's debut album Highway Collection, set for release on March 15th.
Lovett's recording of "Eye Of The Storm" is the mirror image of their music video. While the song employs all organic instrumentation with a single synthesized element, the video executes a near perfect reversal with its finesse for CGI animation and special effects. Directed by Chris Alender of Soapbox Films, the video is more accurately described as a short film, one transporting viewers into a richly detailed steampunk world where a lone skycaptain pilots an airship through the celestial heart of a raging storm.
Lovett's Highway Collection exudes the driving pulse and child-like innocence of The Shins, with the zany and dreamy backing vocals of The Flaming Lips, over the rolling beats of a modernized Strawberry Fields-era Beatles. The album's lush and textured soundscape is due in part to the eclectic cast of contributing musicians from across the country, pulling members from bands as diverse as The Avett Brothers, The Mars Volta, and Cursive to Spiritualized and The Sonos Quartet. Highway Collection comes out on March 15th, 2011.
As the layers peel back over the coming weeks, the Lovett circus will heat things up with a Valentine's Day release of their second single "Heartattack" and the release of the next cinematic installment of videos, a visual rendition of "The Fear" by The Signal director, David Bruckner. Keep on eye on Lovett and his all-star carnival band this year at SXSW as they are sure to spice of the festival with memorable shows and plenty of surprises.
