When a ship is sinking and they lower the lifeboatsAnd hand out the life jackets, The men keep on their coatsThe women and the children are the onesWho must go firstAnd the men who try to save their skinsAre cowards and are cursedEvery man's a captain, men know how to drownMan the lifeboats if there's room, otherwise go downAnd it's the same when there's a war on:It's the men who go to fightWomen and children are civilians, When they're killed it's not rightMen kill men in uniform, it's the way war goesWhen they run they're cowards, When they stay they are heroesEvery man's a general, men go off to warThe battlefields a man's world, Cannon fodders what they're forIt's the men who have the power, It's the men who have the mightAnd the world's a place of horrorBecause each man thinks he's rightA man's home is his castle so the family let him inBut what's important in that kingdomIs the women and the childrenA husband and a father, every man's a kingBut he's really just a drone, Gathers no honey, has no stingHave pity on the general, the king, and the captainThey know they're expendable, after all they're men

This is possibly my favourite Loudon song. It's really poignant and makes you think a bit about how men are seen.

i think you are forgetting that its your choice whether or not u have kids. if men don't do the things mentioned in this song society stereotypes them as cowards or selfish automatically.

Men deserve credit for a lot of things and in today's world they seldom get it. Respect for what men do is often downplayed and forgotten. Your comment proves this.

I had no idea Loudon did such beautiful and moving work. I'm a bit ashamed, now, that the only thing I knew of his was the hilarious, "I Wish I Was a Lesbian", watch?v=mBUdxLsS5g4 which portrays men in very differently. This changes the way I hear that song.

certainly true after separation. men who have been loving fathers have no legal rights to maintain a relationship with their children. they will often lose them or walk away to avoid the legal costs/emotional pain of having to justify to a room full of strangers why their children should have a relationship with them. bizarre!

@Hulkmania316 and yet producing the next generation does not routinely risk YOUR life. So.

It's one of my faves...I've been doing this one for years...always loved those lyrics: "...A husband and a father, every man's a king, But he's really just a drone; gathers no honey; has no sting..."

Loudon took requests last night when I saw him and somehow heard me say "Men" over many other songs. Seeing him sing it live was one of the most amazing moments of my life. An under-appreciated musical genius!

I first heard this about nine years ago. It was in the background of a program about men on NPR. It was so cool to be able to find it after all this time.

I was about 15...saturday afternoon... listening to andy kershaw on radio 1 doing a show about the great songwriters. This closed the show. I never forgot it. Isn't the internet fantastic ?

Nice lyrics and melody ... Sounds a lot like Van Dyke's arranging. I really enjoyed your tunes in Knocked Up. Dennis Albro
