She's my best friend

certainly not your average girl

Yeah, she's my best friend

she understands me when I'm feeling

Down-down-down-down-down-down

you know it sure hurts to be that way

Down-down-down-down-down-down

you know it sure hurts to know that you're that kinda fella

Ah, here's to Mullberry Jane (here's to Mullberry Jane)

she made jam when she came

Somebody cut off her feet

now, jelly rolls in the street

If you want to see me

well, honey, you know that I'm not around

But if you want to hear me

why don't you just turn around

and by the window where the light is

She's my best friend

certainly not just like your average dog or car

She's my best friend

she understands me when I'm feeling

Down-down-down-down-down-down

you know it sure hurts to be that way

Down-down-down-down-down-down

you know it sure hurts to know that you're that kinda fella

Let's hear one for Newspaper Joe (Newspaper Joe)

he caught his hand in the door (caught his hand in the door)

Dropped his, ah, teeth on the floor, they say

hey, now, joke is that's the way the news goes

If you want to see, yeah, see me

well, baby, you know that I'm not around

But if you want to feel, yeah, feel me

why don't you just turn around

and by the window where the light is

She's my best friend

she's my best friend, tell me, oh, baby now

She's my best friend

oh, she's my, she's my best friend, give it now

She's my best friend

she's my, she's, she's my best friend

She's my best friend

she's my best friend, tell me, oh, babe now

I actually like the Velvet Underground version better though.

One of my favorite Lou Reed songs of all time.

The Velvet Underground version doesn't even *exist* compared to this!

Definitely one of the Top Ten moments in Lou Reed History. Lou quits fucking around and actually SINGS this motherfucker!5:52 is a favorite moment, but anyone who hasn't fallen in love with this song by 1:45 is in trouble, not to be trusted, and won't care what goes on during the fade-out.As with "Sad Song", once again -- to the dismay of Velvet Underground purists -- Lou absolutely *kills* this song here, leaving the VU version to the ash-heap of history. And ALL of *Coney Island Baby* is this good! (Well, I don't care much for "Kicks".) I paid $18.95 for a German import CD, a few years before it was properly remastered and released in the U.S. With bonus tracks. So I bought it again!

Yes. MMM was such a low point for Lou. He must have really been hurting. But man did he come back strong with this album. We all felt better going forward with these tracks in our players.

J'élis ce titre meilleur titre de Lou Reed et meilleure chanson sur l'amitié mixte ! De CONEY iLSLAND BABY, le plus soigné de ses albums à mon humble avis.

A brillant comeback from Lou Reed after the debacle of Metal Machine Music.

Oh, that's cool, you figured it out for yourself, so disregard my previous response to you. Hey, the first time or two that I heard it, I wasn't sure, either. But I heard Lou's "Coney Island Baby" version first, and I think it's miles better than the VU's. Hearing one version before the other has a lot to do with preferences. You should hear Jules Shear's original version of "All Through the Night", which became a hit when Cyndi Lauper covered it. You'd get a kick out of how different it is.

No, I'm the idiot. It was Doug. Apologies. I checked the Wikipedia credits, and then listened to the song, and then realised that Doug was just doing a surprisingly accurate impression of Lou being melodic.

My home planet is Earth! A world where they know that it was Lou Reed, and not Doug Yule, who sang on the VU version of "She's My Best Friend" ;)

Do let us know if you achieve levitation during rehearsals. The whole long ending to this song, even the backing harmonies, all suggest to me the musicians are up against the ceiling! I LIVE for that "Laa, da-da-dah" at the end.

>I like this song a lot, although I do prefer the VU version. - If it's not too personal to ask, what's the name of YOUR home planet?

This is SO damn good -- I thank you for posting it. When he sings "seeee meee", he holds a strong B note over E major to G major chords. It's among his finest moments as a singer. And it's so, SO much better than the Velvet Underground version with Doug Yule singing. Lou Reed is deadly effective at slow tempos, and then to hear the end build, as if the musicians are attempting to make the listener LEVITATE! This song proves yet again, Lou is at his best when laid-back and singing about women!

Sure hurts to know that you're that kind of fella ... ha ha. I'm making a facebook post for a long-time friend. She & I were Just Friends from the start, but with some monkey business on my part, so this is, has been, my theme song for her, with love. Ya, this album, & Sally Can't Dance, together: an underrated, catastrophically-ambivalent-about-romance bitter pair that figured hugely in my disastrous romantic bio. I like to pretend my dad & mom were Lou Reed and Patti Smith ;-)
