Velvet Underground band members Lou Reed & John Cale hadn't spoken for many years until they met at the memorial service for their late mentor Andy Warhol on April 1 1987. The painter Julian Schnabel suggest they collaborate to write a memorial piece for Andy. Songs for Drella was the result of that collaboration and paid homage to their late mentor.
