This is one of my fav lou songs and one of my fav lou lines is "they tied his hands behind his back to teach him how to swim" - love it! Great sense of humor. Hate it when people at the front are sitting and those at back are dancing and how can anyone not be dancing to this!

It's less caustic probably because if Lou went onstage and sang this song the way he did in the studio, his voice would be blown out, and the rest of the show would suffer for it. It's kinda like the old chestnut about how, when the Beatles recorded their first album in a single day (not unlike playing a concert), they had to record "Twist and Shout" last, because it shredded John Lennon's vocal cords to sing the lead the way he did.

I've read where Lou described this song as a "self portrait". It might have been in the Between Thought and Expression book, a selection of lyrics with author's notes throughout.
