Lyrics:

Of all the money that here I spent, I spent it in good company

And of all the harm that here I've done, alas was done to none but me

And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I can't recall

So fill to me the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Oh, if I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit awhile

There's a fair young man in this town that sorely has my heart beguiled

His rosy cheeks and lovely lips, alone he has my heart in thrall

So fill to me the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Of all the comrades that here I've had, they're sorry for my going away,

And of all the sweethearts that here I had, they wish me one more day to stay,

But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise and you should not,

I will gently rise and softly call. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Of all the money that e'er I spent I've spent it in good company And all the harm that ever I did Alas it was to none but me And all I've done for want of wit To memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all If I had money enough to spend And leisure to sit awhile There is a fair maid in the town That sorely has my heart beguiled Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips I own she has my heart enthralled So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had They're sorry for my going away And all the sweethearts that e'er I had They'd wish me one more day to stay But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise and you should not I'll gently rise and softly call Good night and joy be with you all

I've always loved her. Strangely enough my fave song from her is "The Highwayman" idk y, considering the story it tells. There's just something about the way she sings it that gets me to listen to it over and over

Is it not a song of reminisance and regret? Hardly emotions of speed and glance over.i reckon she captures the mood beatifully

I agree that her timing is a bit to slow, but I like this version better than other singers. Her voice is so haunting and enchanting, I feel as if I have been put into a trance.

Like this version, even though I have listened to Liam Clancy & other's on this. She puts so much feeling into it

It's a good effort by a brilliant singer.... but I feel somehow Loreena just misses the mark with this one. The Sarah Greene or Sinéad O'Connor versions get the air of melancholy and regretful remembrance just right.

Loreena McKennitt has a lovely voice, and often makes a song mysterious and evocative, but sadly she's missed the boat with this one - her tempo is much, much too slow, and her style not melancholy but lachrimose. Pity.

Sorry - should have been spelled "e'er."

I think the lyrics in the first two lines are off just a tad. Instead of "here" (as in "here I spent," and "here I've done"), it should be "e're," a one syllable abbreviation of "ever." Just sayin.

When the hell did I say I thought Loreena was the original composer? I am completely aware of the fact that this is a traditional song. Before you make another asinine reply to a comment, read it first. One more thing, Hippiemosquitoquatro never said they thought it was written by Loreena.

@HippieMosquitoQuatro and whoever else thinks that Loreena Mckennitt is the origonal composer of The Parting Glass, and that it was only The Walking Dead that at this time has made it popular, it's a Irish/Scottish poem-turned-folk song from around 17th century, so before you go all out on defending Loreena and giving hate to The Walking Dead (which is a fucking good show), do some research. Fucking love history i do.

Well the popularity of TV shows sadly out weights the popularity of good music. But dont fret, at least they are introduced to good music through a common medium such as TV.

It took almost a year to get a positive reply to that comment. It's great to finally find a kindred spirit.
