Doing some research, I was looking for this song's meaning. I found something that pretty much said --

Robert DeLong in the line, " I've been fucking around while you've been saving the world... " could mean how he's been acting out against his religion, while his religion is 'saving the world', and " On the long way down... " Could mean finding the long way into afterlife, while everyone else takes the easier way.
