I remember him at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester with the HCM and Rod Stewart. We used to attend midnight sessions there as well! We would go for a pint earlier in the evening at the Kings Head and chat along with Rod Stewart! Absolutely great times.

I used to see Long John down the Marquee' in the early 60`s. I remember one time in 1964-65 when he had young Rod Stewart out of the crowd & up on the stage to sing a number, I was with Ron Wood. You know what happened next! <3 B|

I'm very happy with your approach and words to explain how you look at this, thanks!! John Baldry did quite a lot for music and artists troughout many years and deserves quite a lot of respect for that, besides this isn't that bad at all.

To the detractors, can't you comprehend that anyone trying to cover a blues tune is paying sincere homage to the writer, artists & performers that have come before them. Yes this is a version, an interpretation of the genre. Likely most would agree they are humbled by the original artists. If they copied the song perfectly ( and some can do that ), you probably would accuse them of well copying the material. Not my favorite version but certainly worth a listen. Thanks for posting.

@fenlandfolly Just found and heard the Irma Thomas version - the bass makes it sound a bit country/cabaret for my liking, About 30 years ago, I watched a South Bank Show documentary about the Everly Brothers - the main thing I remember was a guy singing a blues song which started "Well it rained 5 days.." That one line has stuck with me ever since. Thanks to the wonders of youtube, I've since found out that it was 'Backwater Blues'. I plan to learn it and play it, if that's OK?

Long John was playing blues before The Who. Before Paul Butterfield. Before most white people on earth ever heard of the blues. Should he have apologized for being white and English? Nah, normal people thanked him for opening the door to blues, boogie-woogie, and rock music to them.So fenland folly, get your panties unbunched, have a hurricane and relax, for crying out loud.

John has the blues pedigree and history to play this, so get over it!
