I was not familiar with this version... is the one with Mick Jagger the only Chieftans version? That's all I could find here. The harp and strings are a very interesting variation, I appreciate it a lot. Makes the song more gospel-y for me, which I don't love, I miss the grittiness that Bruce and Levon have, I love the prevalent tuba The Band uses (I played it, I'm biased). But that's the beauty of music, hits us all differently. Regardless of version, obviously a beautiful, deep, song.

They just ruined this song, shame on Springsteen, what a shame. I listened to this song when I was a little girl. My mom had the record, I can't remember when it came out and who first sang it, but these guys stink.

I think Dave Matthews and Emmylou Harris did it perfectly. Haunting and sad, the arrangement is top notch and Emmylou's voice is perfect for this song.
