Far too often, when people think of Bobby Darin, they think of him as a far more effective swinger than a balladeer. It was just this topic that I was arguing with a friend of mine about recently. He stated that Darin was a superb swinger, on a level with the best of all-times but it was his ballad singing that really kept him from the elite group of male singers of that style of music. I immediately thought of this tune and played it for my friend. It's a old Gershwin song sung to a fare-thee-well by Al Jolsen back in the late 20s. Darin sings it convincingly with extremely sympathetic support from Richard Wess. Just as Sinatra had Nelson Riddle to provide him his most consistently great charts, I would say that Richard Wess was the same sort of partner in Darin's musical efforts. I have no information on the band members but I can say that my friend was impressed by this performance. Even still, he wouldn't admit that Darin had the chops for singing the great ballads. What do you guys think?
