LITTLE BRENDA LEE - Bigelow 6-200 (1956) Video Free Download

This single, backed with "Jambalaya," was Brenda's first record. However, crediting her as "9 Years Old" was flat-out wrong. What very few would have known is, when this came out (Sept. 1956), Brenda was already 11, and would turn 12 in three months (December 11th).

Regardless, both sides are fantastic! Nowadays, Bigelow 6-200 would be 242-6200.

I can add this to the list of songs I know with phone numbers in them: "Beechwood 4-5789" by the Marvelettes, "634-5789" by Wilson Pickett, "Pennsylvania 6-5000" by Glenn Miller, and "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone. Pennsylvania 6-5000 is probably from the time period of operator assistance, but maybe in New York, they needed more digits. It would have become 736-5000; 212-736-5000 with the NYC area code. Beechwood 4-5789 would have become 234-5789; 313-234-5789 with the Detroit area code.

This type of number was from an era where you had to go through the operator to even make a local call: an exchange name (Bigelow) plus 4 digits. When direct dialing was introduced, it became the first two letters of the exchange, a new digit, then 6200: BI n-6200, where n is 1-9. Later it would be 24n-6200, with 0 added as a possibility for n. For direct dialing long distance, an area code, such as 404 for Atlanta, was added: 404-24n-6200. Generally, 00 endings have been for businesses.
