There is a reason it sounds so wierd. This is basically a mono file. Since the vocals are focused in the middle, what you can do is combine the channels and flip the phase one one. This essentially cancels out the vocals and leaves all the "side" (a.k.a stuff not in a direct middle panning) info still there. The end effect is a lower quality signal along with a mono file. It cannot be considered a true instrumental though because it eliminates any instruments in the middle. Try again.
