There are lots of comments here I agree with but yours strikes a real chord. This song is the ultimate song of unrequited love. We have all been there if we have lived at all. Your male friend you have loved forever wants the gorgeous blonde and she in turn wants the guy in the third year who maybe is gay or has a girlfriend at home. Linda's voice is saturated with emotion because she too has felt that wanting for someone who will never want her. (or so I choose to believe!)
