As a little boy, I remember hearing about Linda Jones and not knowing who she was. My friends and I would go to the fish and chips restaurant in the neighborhood just to play songs on the jukebox for a quarter. Everybody had their favorite song and I did too. The last song on the box would always show up before we played a song or we'd have to wait until we could use the box. I noticed that one singer I didn't know, Linda Jones, seemed to be very popular on the box. I didn't think much about it at the time, so I just went on playing my songs with my friends. Years later, I found out the connection between those jukebox days and Linda Jones. This woman was supremely talented and had a voice that is so stirring and powerful and it was like her songs have been in my head even when I didn't realize how great she was.

My mother, who is 64 now, and I were listening to this song in the car the other day. She hadn't heard it in years. Toward the end of the song, she got real still, looking at the CD player with a sad look on her face that I've never seen. Tears rolled down. She hurried up and wiped them ( my mother never cries and when she does she doesn't want anybody to see her). My heart for her was really touched. I could not stop thinking about that song and my mom's reaction to it. I waited a day or so. The next day, as I was getting out of the car, I paused and asked her: mom, you remember that song that we were listening to the other day? It seem like you really got touched. What were you thinking about?" She looked at me with this "please don't make me talk about that" look, and then she said, "I was thinking about how I ruined my life". She began to share with me that around the time that song was popular, she was 19 years old. She was in love with a nice young man. His dad did not like my mom, he felt like she wasn't good enough for him. (my mom was raised in the poorer side of their town) And because that relationship that wasn't allowed, my mom ended up meeting my dad. My dad physically abused her in the worst way. He would punch her and beat her and once he even whipped her with a coat hanger. After she ran from him, she got in various unhealthy relationships; some would be abusive to her as well. Well during that time, crack-cocaine hit the scene. My mom did experiment with that drug, and wound up being a crack addict for the next 30 Years. Life was very hard for me and my sister to say the least. my mom's main thought and focus was her addiction to crack cocaine for the duration of my childhood. Me and my sister were neglected and we were physically, verbally, and mentally abused by her. Well, My mom has given her life to Christ now, she's been saved for about 12 years now. But I hadn't got the healing that I needed from the things that occurred with me in my childhood. Well, after my mother told me the story behind this song and why it touched her and shared with me the sadness and regrets, of her life; right then and there I got my release. My mom didn't want to be an abusive, crack-cocaine addict. Crack cocaine (and other controlled substances) takes the choices from the addict, and generations can be ruined. I even had a short stint where I was addicted to it for about 5 months. It felt like an eternity! So, its not like I hadn't walked a mile in her shoes. However, I chose my children over the drug. And I would always wonder why she didn't do the same. Well now I understand. She didn't know any better. No one was guiding her, she really didn't know how to guide us. I'm happy to say my mother and I now have an awesome relationship and she has a wonderful relationship with her grandchildren. It has been an absolute joy just getting to really and truly know her. I just wanted to share how this song touched me and my mother in such a profound way; and even brought healing to our family.
