I just ran across Levon again by accident by watching Coal Miner's Daughter. Last night I watched The Last Waltz. My memories of Levon go back to the Le Coq Dor tavern when he played with Ronnie Hawkins in the early 60's. RIP Levon.

"My name is Virgil Cain...and I served on the Danville train!" Oh Levon how you are missed but never, never forgotten! I love all of the members of The Band but for me you will always be the soul of the group. I was blessed to see you twice at Fillmore West. Rest In Peace, dear brother.

I always loved his music, but you know, I loved him in The Right Stuff. That was a classic movie and he deserves to be remembered there too.....hey Ridley you got any Beamons? I think I might have me a stick......

My wife and I were so fortunate to make a ramble back in 2008, the night that the Grammys were presented for Dirt Farmer and we got a chance to touch base with Levon. I've known him since 1959 when I first saw him stick twirling at Port Dover's Summer Garden with Ronnie Hawkin's Hawks at the ripe old age of 20. At the time I was drumming with the Starlights, Rick Danko's band which fronted the Hawks on many occasions during 1960. Memories of his friendship and talent will remain forever.

We are so grateful that we interviewed Levon Helm and filmed him in performance at his Woodstock farm for our "Quick Hits" series for PBS Arts online. We had no idea he would leave us so soon afterwards. He was obviously in poor health, but he was in great spirits, had that high-beam smile, and drummed for two hours, surrounded by family and friends. We'll never forget that night, or Levon.

hah, thx. now my kids know why I always say "They got it now, Robbie" and why I grin mischieviously and giggle whenever I ask them to get "a loaf of bread" or "baloney."

Notice how when all the great musos and artists of the 60's and 70's leave us they are never replaced...that's another sad aspect to Levon's passing.

Levon Helm truly inspired me to big up those drum sticks and start playing. Ever since I saw "The Last Waltz" when I was nine years old, I have always looked up to Levon as my idol. You were a great musician. You were a great man. Rest in pease Levon Helm. I will never forget you.
