Pres inspired so many great tenor Sax Artists especially Stan Getz! Pres once said Bean was the first President out of respect for Coleman Hawkins talent in featuring the Tenor Sax as a solo instrument!

Basie & Lester - what a combo! Less is more!

Lester Young was a giant among the cats who invented the modern Tenor Sax, but it's hard to discuss those guys without respect for the name Coleman Hawkins. I don't want to get into that sophomoric spiral about who's "better" than who - they're like diamonds, emeralds, rubies, etc.

Prez was the first modern and in turn influenced Charlie Christian and Charlie Parker who were elemental in the development of Modern Jazz. He's my "desert isle" choice.

His time! and phrasing. Of course with other qualities he had adds up to one VERY special player.

I'm very sure this was recorded by the Savoy label, at the WOR Studios (Chicago); it's an alternate take. Young's complete recordings (for Savoy) are available from different sources, incl. CD Universe, and there are 46 titles (in the reissues, available in CD/MP3 forms).

This is from a 78? Amazing sound quality. Savoy? When was it recorded?
