That's amazing! Really amazing! Suddenly her frenetic pre-Turning music makes a lot more sense shorn of its dated and somewhat sub-standard 80s CCM production and instrumentation. And listen to how much energy she has with just vocals and a strummed classical guitar - I just cross-checked with the album version and this acoustic rendition has a hundred times the energy and passion - and meaningfulness. OK, it probably doesn't stand up with her later work but in this form it sits quite nicely alongside artists such as Mark Heard and... all those other people who sounded a bit like Mark Heard.I wonder is there a secret archive of acoustic or stripped down recordings of her early work? And I thought she must be lip-syncing but on second watching I noticed tiny microphones on her guitar and her shirt, so it appears to actually be live. Impressive and revelatory - thanks for posting.

I understand there were issues with the industry in Christian music. Whatever it was there is a verse in the bible about offering a cup that it will not be forgotten nor go unrewarded. For one i will not forget. She had, hopefully still has, a heart in tune with God that i miss. Pray she knows that God is not the people that try their best to serve Him, she was the real deal in the relationship part, which is what counts.

I like HER whatever her name, it was Sam I discovered first but am still sad she don't do Christain music, :( but maybe she had enough of the industry? She sold lots of albums as Leslie bcz she had a PR and distribution system behind her, she's indie now. Loved Fan Dance etc :) Not so sure about the New album Push Any Button though.

I been looking for a copy of the show that this was on. "NightLight" it was so funny they only did four shows. And it was up there with "SNL" but Christian. Any chance of knowing how I can a copy of them? Thanks Johnny

Leslie was my favorite female artist of that era. "Dancing With Danger" was my favorite!

There is no such thing as Christian music or Secular Music. Music is Music. Leslie and Sam are the same person. I hear people still after 30 years say things like they hope Leslie returns to Jesus and i cringe. People grow up as people and as artists. They can't continue to write the same songs as they did when they were teenagers. It doesn't make them less Christian or less seeker of Truth.

I was blessed to be introduced to Leslie and her music when I first heard "Bring Me Through" on the radio about 30 years ago.I have loved her music as Leslie and then as Sam ever since.Thankfully,I had the chance 5 years ago to see her in Albany,NY in concert and afterward meeting this lovely and friendly artist. She is an amazing and superb singer-songwriter-musician indeed!!

I've got to love what lasts, Because where you hide your treasure you hide your heart If you hide it in this world you know it's going to fall apart.

I have to say I miss "Leslie" too. I was a little surprised to find when I compiled a list of my favorite CCM songs of the 80s recently that she came in as the #1 artist.

My brother introduced me to Leslie back when I was an early teen. I had a tape of Beyond Saturday Night but it was recorded off of an album. Anyways I listened to that tape until it was warn out. Christian music, both the sound/lyrics were different back then. Not taking anything away from the music of today but there was more conviction and a real sense of a conversion that took place in someones life. Could you imagine the song by Resurrection Band "Every time it rains" today? Good stuff.

Artist: Leslie Phillips nka - Sam PhillipsMust confess I have found this weeks theme hard... cause pretty much all the music I listen to is "B" sides... ie... Off the beaten path. So I forgive me if I drive this a little different direction. Several links from one artist that represent to very different stages in her career.I can think of only a few other artists who undergo such a metamorphosis that they require a different name. We have Cat Steven who became Yusuf Islam (after converting to Islam), and we have Leslie Phillips who became Sam Phillips after shedding her early identity as a contemporary Christian artist to become something else. Leslie and Sam seem like two totally different people. (About the time of her de-conversion she married, T Bone Burnett, but they have since split.)As is, Leslie, Leslie/Sam sounded a bit like Cindy Lauper, She reinvented herself as Sam, going for a lean, melancholy sound characterized by simple instrumentation and soft harmonies. There are a whole bunch of Sam selections on You-tube. Here are a few.Sam Philips - How to Dream (Gilmore Girls Song)If I could write -- Sam PhillipsSam Phillips' Tiny Desk Concert at NPR Music

I'm definitely more of a fan of her "sam" work, but this is the first time I've heard her really belt out something, and do it really well! Pretty impressive.
