French is the best but the Russian and Italian are surprisingly good.

to be honest, i think all the versions are beautiful and the best. they are for all people to enjoy, some people only speak one language and they are trying to understand more, for the time being, the different versions are so people can enjoy the whole show and appreciate its beauty while trying to understand the original. just my take on it, being a spanish and english speaker, my current hobby is learning french and this show is my drive to learn it. so i can understand it in all its glory.

@BenderIsGreat It does lose some power in English I agree, especially in the line " when a woman won't give me a single caress" Vs. "When no woman would even look me in the eyes" the literal translation illustrates more Agony, it shows that Quasimodo would be happy with some recognition/acknowledgement....the word "Caress" points to sexual/intimacy....which Quasi does want, but it takes away from his true character of a tortured soul. just my view of it.

LOL Can you imagine what Garou must have went through to memorize the song in French? And then the English version comes along and I can imagine: "Garou, will you do NDDP in English?" "Sure!" "Oh by the way, you know Les Cloches? You have to memorize the whole thing again, except now in English." "Ohhhhh shit..."

OMG.... I am an English speaker, but after listening to this song in French 500 million times, I don't understand a single word they're saying because I'm expecting the words to be in French!! Wow.

It's so weird to hear English appear to come out of Garou's mouth! I expect to hear the French and I'm surprised when I don't!

I actually think this is one of the better translated songs from the show. I have both recordings - the English highlights and the original French, and have always preferred the French (I'm American btw). Mostly it's a translation issue; if that had been done better and more consistently with it maybe I would feel differently. But this song does it better than most of the others on the English album. The trick is all the feast days...

.. I'm french as well. But it didn't ruin the play, all it did was help english people understand what their saying. Although I do think that a few parts sound a lot better in french... don't shun it if it is just helping people that don't understand what they are saying... I can tell you that it's a hell a lot better if they understand without looking at sub titles.

OH MY GOSH! the song is beautiful in french but not everyone understands it- in a way this promotes the french version, no need to be so harsh about it either- not everyone has a perfect voice and im sure u wud make even more of a slaughter at it. and yes- the original is french, and the video is french with english dubbing. and i beleive the french wud do that to such a beautiful story. ( theres was the o.r.i.g.i.n.a.l remember?)

Jasperhalover123: Some singers wouldn't sing in English. And if you're not happy with the english version, don't watch it! And so you know, I'm french. And really, such a song is tough because you can't change the names of the feasts... really good one!

absolutely breath taking, though I love the French version, I'm really glad to hear this. now when I listen the it in French I'll have a better idea of what they are saying. I always get chills on that last note, no clue how he can make his voice so rough and yet soothing!

ok first the song is beautiful in french and this english version is slaughtering it. second the english version of this whole musical is once again i say slaughtering the beautiful french version of it which is the o.r.i.g.i.n.a.l. and i would know because i am french and i have seen the musical live. third of all those aren't the real voices of the singers. and fourth of all who in there right mind would do such a thing to such a beautiful story!!!!?????!!!!!????
