Walk on By" is a 1961 song written by Kendall Hayes and Gary Walker and performed by Leroy Van Dyke. It was Van Dyke's most successful single, spending 37 weeks on the country chart and a record-breaking 19 at the number-one position. "Walk on By" crossed over to the pop chart peaking at number five, and was named by Billboard magazine as the biggest country music record in history. It is one of all favorite songs. Another great song by Leroy Van Dyke was the Auctioneer song in 1959.

Great stuff! Takes me back to those formative years in Liverpool. UK When this record first came out around '62. It was a popular Juke box hit in all the local coffee bars. And here comes a tale involving the Beatles early days before their recording fame took off. Near to where I lived (not far from Penny Lane) there used to be a famous coffee bar known as the Windmill. Pete Best, who was the Beatles first drummer lived on Penny Lane and the Beatles used to gather here some nights in the week. Frank, the owner of the Windmill was an old Dutch guy and he stood no nonsense but also made everyone welcome. He had a great Wurlitzer jukebox that played all the latest hits and there was also a back room that was full of Pinball machines. Frank the owner was always playing this record as he presumed that the American singer Leroy VanDyke was from a Dutch family. So, I would be in the front of the cafe, supping a bottle of Cola while Frank put on this music. The Beatles would walk in and head straight for the pinball machines. Happy days.

Le Roy was a decent guitar player as I recall. I met him in Davenport, Iowa back around 1959 at a place where he sang the Auctioneer Song, Rock Island Line and a couple of others, just him and his guitar.

I have just listened to Dean Martin's version of this, and have to say that I much prefer it....slower, and sung with more real "heart" - a real understanding of the lyrics (but, of course, I realize that's just my opinion - others might feel the exact opposite..!!)

Sorry to burst your bubble boys but Le Roy Van Dyke CAN play guitar, If YOU could play you would know he is playing Rhythm and all the formation of his bar chords and changes are correct ! Who ever told you its just a prop doesn't know much about guitar playing :) BUT he doesn't play lead.. there is a big difference

I think Al Casey ( the studio musician at Jamie records) plays the guitar on this , might be Duane Eddy, too. Leroy Van Dyke couldn't play, like someone said. But he could sing.

Actually, he cannot play the guitar at all. It was a prop. My two friends toured with him every summer and road his bus. But he has a great voice.

A guitar, a bass, a keyboard, drums.....not a fiddle or steel guitar anywhere in sight. THIS is country?
