Here'a a jumper for you! There's going to be a live television production of Charlie Small's musical "The Wiz". Charlie Small's score, in every way, is as good as Arlen's score for "The Wizard of Oz". I know many of you will disagree, but with songs like this one, "Home", and "Soon As I Get home" the score is truly memorable ! Here is an exciting clip from Lena Horne's one woman show which she did in the 80's ,where she sings one of the great songs from "The Wiz" entitled "Believe In Yourself"! This song could have been written by a motivational speaker such as Tony Roberts. So, when Hollywood came a calling, Lena Horne simply didn't want to move out west. Her friend Duke Ellington countered:"You must go, you were chosen". We all know what happened next in Hollywoodland. Lena would be given roles in musicals where her movie moments could be cut out for Southern movie goers. To add insult to injury, she wasn't cast in "Showboat" for just this reason. MGM simply was not willing to take the chance that Lena, being an African American woman, would drive movie goers away.True, "Cabin In The Sky" featured an all African American cast, but that's the point. There was a never a thought that maybe, through music, the one race known as humanity could come together as the Beatles once said. In this production, when she sings Raposo's "Being Green", it's not difficult to understand what she is singing about. I'm looking forward to the upcoming production of "The Wiz"! I can't wait to see who the producers cast in the leading roles. We'll be back!
