Now that I think of it, but it may sound wrong, but if Bonham didn't die, Jimmy would die first because of his heroin addiction then.

You're so off base here, it ridiculous. Keep your opinions as such not fact! They've always sold out their shows. Your last comment about Page...go to hell!

To say 'they'd be done.' and to base any opinion on Robert's revisionism on that time that was highly in flux I would contend is a stretch at best. Things could've gone a half a dozen ways.

This thread is a little over confident in its certainty. First, we have accounts from JPJ saying that the band was going through a renaissance and spirits were very high in '80. Bonzo was struggling with heroin addiction and getting help for it. Plant was uncertain of the future and uneasy leaving his family for a lengthy tour. In short, Plant has been known to rewrite history. So, taking him at face value is a mistake. 1980 was a transitory time that could've gone many ways.

Well thats weird, Jimmy said bonzo and him were talking about making more heavier records after in through the outdoor. Because Bonzo and Jimmy didn't want to take that in through the outdoor rout.

It goes to show you in the public mind, they are frozen in 1973 or 1975 imagery.

Yes, Page was the one who kept the legacy alive for many years, now oddly, it seems Plant has embraced that role. I believe the failed reunion after the 02, soured Page greatly. Before that he was always gung-ho to work with Plant. You are right in the context of Bonham's death that it immortalized them. There was/is no growing old al la The Stones and the occasional bad record.. They are remembered in their prime. I've shown people 1980 shots and they are - that's zeppelin?

Page is forever selling the band, He would be most unwise to say that his group is a pile of shite cos they are all spanked out on something or other. Scapegoat is a bit is a strong but his death did immortalise them at the top of the public careers-i so think anyway.

This is contradictory to statements by JPJ, saying the band was in a spirit of renewal and onward into round 2 by 1980. Saying if Bonzo hadn't died they'd be remembered alongside Foghat is a bit silly. Same for their fanbase being dramatically reduced. Really? what facts do you have for this statement? They were struggling due to the drugs, Plant was pissed about that and unsure whether to carry on. He did and was tentatively going forward with the band in '80. Don't buy Plant's revisionism.

I'm surprised how relatively well Page is playing here...better than 77 or 79 at least. By the way he was definitely still very much on heroin at this time, as was pointed out you can see he's completely out of his mind at the ARMS thing in 83, same at Live Aid in 85, and if not on drugs he was still drinking heavily at the end of the 80s with his Outrider tour... It's a little sad to see them like this considering their Golden Gods era in the early to mid 70s though.

Jimmy Page

I think Page only got sober around '82 or '83. Just watch the 1983 arms concert. He's completely out of his mind.

Page (nor Bonzo) were drug free in 1980. The 80 shows however were much better than both the 75 and 77 shows.

@Metalflake111 - Not sure thats completely true. I have read much about the band and period and I have read in more then one account that Jimmy Page was deep into "Mr. Brownstone" use and just wasn't really able to lead and produce at the time of writing, who knows. Apparently by the time they got back on the road in 79/80 Jimmy had tackled the problem and was in charge again. Pagey sure looks skinny in 80 but then again I guess he always looked skinny...well thats the skinny.

@LightenUpMcGraw Prior to that album Plant had been in a car accident and was not in good form/health. Jones though had bought lots of new "Toys" as he put it and had been experimenting a lot with them.........It was just a case of when they went into the studio to rehearse for I.T.T.O.D. he had an awfull lot more ideas for songs than the rest of the band.

@PBANDSNOW i guess you read that somewhere,i think if you had that conversation with either jimmy or robert youd get a few laughs. As for a fanbase, this is not some half wit xfactor outfit.Bands like this will be around in music history for ever, just as all great composers who write and perform in a magnificent way. Can only assume as to if they would still be around, maybe not,but then again with all true greats they dont need tobe when leaving behind them a legacy like that.

@PBANDSNOW Hi, i totally agree with you, if bonham hadn't of died Zeppelin would not be the force they are today.
