when you listen to this and then hear those early early recordings of dylan...that's the speaking voice he uses between songs and in interviews. it's a dead-on impression.

Not *just* a violent black man. Also a great folk musician.

Ledbetter's voice is growing on me, nice voice, and though I can't always understand through his thick accent, the chatting is very informative. Like his pronunciation of "Looz-anna". Encountered this Careless Love song the first time as a kid watching the biopic with Nat King Cole as W.C. Handy. :>) #leadbelly

This man is an absolute legend his folk and blues was the start of music that we hear today, you may not like his music, but ya gotta respect the man...We've all gone through Careless Love.

As with sea shanties, there are verses that get dropped into several songs: the lines about the apron are common to Careless Love and to Dink's Song (Fare thee well my honey). Just one of the challenging things about a non-written musical tradition!

Leadbelly is an excellent artist - you can see the influence he has had on everyone from Woody Guthrie to Moon Mullican to Bill Broonzy to Jerry Lee Lewis on this one song.
