Laurie's piece "Mach 20" from "United States Live". This was on a short-lived TV show called "The New Show". It was produced by the same producer as an earlier show that employed some of the same people, but it definitely was "The New Show". I mean, I taped the damn thing.

Absolutely love this piece; wish I'd seen it before I consulted a sperm donor 23.5 years ago! Excellent!

Ladies and gentlemen, what you are observing here are magnified examples or facsimiles of human sperm.Generation after generation of these tiny creatures have sacrificed themselves in their persistent, often futile, attempt to transport the basic male genetic code. But where is this information coming from? They have no eyes. No ears.Yet some of them already know that they will be bald.Over half of them will end up as women.Four hundred million living creatures, all knowing precisely the same thing--carbon copies of each other in a Kamikaze race against the clock. Some of you may be surprised to learn that if a sperm were the size of a salmon it would be swimming its seven-inch journey at 500 miles per hour.If a sperm were the size of a whale, however, it would be traveling at 15,000 miles per hour, or Mach 20. Now imagine, if you will, four hundred million blind and desperate sperm whales departing from the Pacific coast of North America swimming at 15,000 mph and arriving in Japanese coastal waters in just under 45 minutes. How would they be received?Would they realize that they were carrying information, a message?Would there be room for so many millions?Would they know that they had been sent for a purpose?

The math is mind boggling as is the way she thought to convey it - fab.

Everybody, obtain your ticket to a Laurie Anderson concert for a great comedy! Say "SPERM" and... giggle! Save the stub of the ticket for later needs to prove everybody your "art stuff" expertice, intelligence, maturity and whatnot.

I remember this show, I think I watched every episode and was sad to see it cancelled. I really liked it if I remember correctly. I absolutely adore Laurie Anderson. Thanks for posting this.

if a sperm was the size of a whale, it would move at a velocity of Mach 20.

From "The New Show" Season 1 (only season) Episode 8, March 16, 1984 Lorraine Newman left SNL in 1980. Lorne Michaels produced it so no wonder it looks like an SNL set.

You cut off "ladies" (in ladies and gentlemen) at the beginning. ;-) Thanks for uploading this. Laurie is awesome.

@lingshu8 I think she just means in general. All of them have the potential to become a human and in that sense half of them would become women. Actually it just seems like she's blanketing the facts over a larger scale so really... either way.
