This song comes from the middle ages, just after the black death swept throughEurope. The singer has gone to join her departed friends??

Great voice, great woman, great song; such a song can never die nor lose its ferver. I loved it since I was a kid and up to this time I still love it. Thanks to Dennis Scrubb the music teacher who taught it to the class my sister was in. She sang it over and over again and I fell in love with it. Great work of the one(s) who originated it and all those who sang it throughout time.

Our little avenue is called Ashgrove and many of our children have left home. It was so nice to know there is a song that captures feeling of a home place.

What a heavenly voice for such a beautiful, yet sad, song. I'm glad I looked this up because I've been singing the wrong words for 30+ years (only to myself tho', not in public) - I was surprised how faulty my memory was. I'll echo David's sigh, sob, crisis.

I like this song, it also means something to me as my surname is Nash, and means "of the ash tree". So I can imagine my ancestors singing this song!

Prancer1231

My lips smile no more, my heart loses its lightness; No dream of the future my spirit can cheer. I only can brood on the past and its brightness The dear ones I long for again gather here. From ev'ry dark nook they press forward to meet me; I lift up my eyes to the broad leafy dome, And others are there, looking downward to greet me The ash grove, the ash grove, again is my home.

Down yonder green meadow where streamlets meander When twilight is fading I pensively roam Or in the bright noon tide in solitude wander Amid the dark spaces of that lonely ash grove. ‘Twas there while the black bird was cheerfully singing I first met my dear one the joy of my heart Around us for gladness the blue bells were springing The ash grove, the ash grove that sheltered my home.

The ash grove how graceful, how plainly 'tis speaking The harp through its playing has language for me. Whenever the light through its branches is breaking, A host of kind faces is gazing on me. The friends from my childhood again are before me Each step wakes a memory as freely I roam. With soft whispers laden the leaves rustle o’er me The ash grove, the ash grove alone is my home.
