I was just recently in the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco to see a visiting relative and realized as I entered the lobby that the last time I had seen Laura in person was in the Hotel's Venetian Room, a small venue, on Valentine's Day 1996 ---a surprise gift from my wife Judith and a great performance. Sadly, Laura was gone 14 months later and my wife 15 years later -- both from ovarian cancer. I couldn't help sneaking into that same room, now vacant, in the hope that I could wake up the echoes. For a moment, I could hear Laura sing Stone Soul Picnic and could feel the touch of my wife's hand. I miss them both beyond words. I listen to LN's music frequently. It brings then both back to me in some sense. What a talent -- Gershwin, Bacharach, Billy Holiday, etc all rolled into one person. I feel fortunate to have seen Ln about 6 times - all in small venues. Maybe they're making music on the Other Side with Judith accompanying LN on piano?Urbanceo

To the person who thinks Burt Bachrach loved what laura did, I never got that feeling when he would condescend to mention her by name. He really made me mad, she was /is still so towering in her effect on music of today. Dionne however does some great covers on youtube of Laura's stuff. she does it w/ the girls from the 5th D.

She poured so much of her soul into the songs she wrote, she left us too early. If you think about it, so many of her pieces were used by other more known stars to make hits...Dionne, Barbara, Thre Dog Night, 5th Dimension, etc. She never truly got the recognition she so richly deserved. So many songs i grew up with...I never knew Laura had written and recorded them first, but now as i rediscover them thanks to YouTube, I realize what a gifted and spiritually rich talent she truly was.

I first heard Laura Nyro on the Rock Machine album of the 60s. Then I re-discovered her in the 1980s when I bought an album compilation in Belgium. What a find! I've now bought all her albums and love them all, especially how she developed from album to album. So sad she's no longer with us. But not forgotten.

It really bothers me that she has not received the recognition so many of her peers did. Maybe if she had spent time in southern California. Any way, I can't think of a better singer songwriter, period.

OMG this version of this song is SO EFFING BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm guessing that both Burt Bacharach & Dionne WarwickLOVE what Nyro did with this song.

There are at least three Laura Nyro arrangements of this tune on You Tube...Love how through the years she reinterpreted tunes to her current thought, both her own and covers...The PAIN of this tune always comes through in her arrangements...Laura, love you forever...
