hauntingly beautiful, I saw them play this song at Cornerstone 1997. Their live version sounded exactly like the CD. this song makes a grown man weep.

Not sure how it was resolved, but apparently it was resolved to everyone's satisfaction, as all four of the original members have reunited on several occasions. In any case, Karen's voice is Over the Rhine to me. Sadly, it appears they will be skipping Portland this year despite having 2 dates scheduled in Seattle. Maybe they'll add a date or two in PDX.

As I recall, this was from the last album with the original OTR. Although most assume that it's about a romantic breakup, the heartfelt melancholy is certainly about the band's run ending. Intially, I believe, at the time this song was produced the intent was to retire the Over the Rhine name. I seem to recall that Berquist and Detweiller were briefly threatened with legal action by former member Brian Kelley when they changed their mind and decided to keep using the name (glad they did).

This group is a true phenonenom! Why the music industry hasn't promoted them to the utmost speaks more to the industry's inadequacies than to the musics inherent worth!

@filtod Thank Goodness! It is still really, really rough though. I don't know if they lived there or just liked the name.

The first time I heard "Latter Days" was on a dreadful TV series, horrendous story and bad acting, but all of a sudden Karen's voice and Linford's piano raised it from maudlin trash to a 12 year love affair with the music of OTR...

I heard of this band because they made an awesome tribute song for my favorite artist - "Don't Wait For Tom" - so I thought they were worth looking into. I'm liking them so far...

I first head of Over The Rhine when I heard this song in a store, I had to go the a worker to track down what I was hearing. Bought the album soon after.

The only cover that he's ever recorded is by Peter Gabriel. To hear Latter Days you'd have to check out a live show. If I ever get my camera fixed (I haven't finalized any of his recordings yet) I have many live versions to choose from that I'll happily post for you.

I have to agree. I saw Michael play this song one time, and could not breathe through the whole performance. I must have been breathing, though, because I didn't pass out!
