The stirring British anthem Rule, Britannia! as performed at the annual Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Though the lyrics are older, the song appeared in Britain in the 1740s and has been performed, with modifications, ever since. It is still sung by patriotic British crowds at sporting and cultural events.

There are elements of patriotic fervour, optimism and gloating in the lyrics of Rule, Britannia! It emerged at a time when the British empire was increasing in size, its naval power was in ascension, and military campaigns against its arch-rival France were more successful than not. Britons - or at least their middle- and upper-classes - also considered themselves the freest people in Europe, sentiments that are echoed in the stirring crescendo "Britons never never never will be slaves!" By implication it mocks the absolutist monarchies of France, Spain, Austria and Russia, whose kings and emperors were not constrained by parliaments and whose citizens enjoyed no voting rights. The great freedom of Britons in the 1700s was, of course, only comparative: voting rights and political representation were still based on land and wealth.

When Britain first at Heaven's command

Arose from out the azure main.

This was the charter of the land

And guardian angels sang this strain.

Rule, Britannia! rule the waves!

Britons never never never will be slaves!

The nations not so blest as thee,

Must in their turn to tyrants fall,

While thou shalt flourish great and free

The dread and envy of them all.

Rule, Britannia! rule the waves!

Britons never never never will be slaves!

Very stirring... a more, uh, punctuated version than I'm used to, but like it. And for those decrying nationalism, listen to Lennon's Imagine. What a boring world that would be. As for British nationalism, the countries their imperialism conquered are in worse shape today than they were in 1900.

Well I am an American and a Briton so Hah ! The US was English/British almost as long as it has been American. George Washington was British long before he was American. The English/British carved America's land and roads and agriculture. from nothing. America's culture is largely English/British and the Poles and Germans and Italians and Irish who came later, have had to learn English law and the English language. Rule Britannia- we have the Empire, now as then....

We're a little more unruly that some might think. We were the youngest and first to leave the British Empire. Not only that, but we left the Empire by force. Other than that, if I wasn't American, I'd be a Brit.

"I don't know why they love tea so much" LOL! This is one the best anthems ever, if not THE best. Hail Britannia! high culture, high Empire. Thank God Britain exists and may they never pass from the Earth. The US is kind of like Britain's unruly child, all grown up! God Bless Britain and the USA :)

@lilmaibe The first and second verses of "Das Lied der Deutschen" or "Deutschlandlied", the national anthem of Germany, are not prohibited in Germany. In official occasions the third verse is usually supposed to be sang.

@toftmf On a sidenote here: Could I hereby ask the world to FINALLY get it's fudging facts straight? It's either -deutschland lied- or german national anthem AND in both cases the first and second verse are prohibited, plainly FORBIDDEN to be performed in germany.

Rule Britannia. As an island united we stand, and we ruled the earth as a united people.

@ramsmad1963 Different people generate different thoughts when hearing different pieces of music. The two songs might sound similar from his POV which you might not have considered, and I don't think there's really a right/wrong when it comes to music. As for the comparison between Star Spangled Banner and Kimigayo..I'd say that's a false analogy because one's an Asian song and the other, American.

@toftmf just read your comments, how can you say that Rule Britania could remind you of Deutschland Deutschland Ueber Alles ? for one the beat is nothing like the same . socondly it's like saying that the star spangled banner sounds similar to Kimigayo. think about it !
