The movie is very romanticized compared to the Nabokovs novel. In reality, Humbert drugged Lolita that night at the inn and would have molested her in her sleep if the pills had worked. The humorous scene where he drugs Charlotte was actually a preparation for when Lolita came home and he would drug both of them. In the beginning of the story, Dolores competes with her mother for Humberts attention. He is the tall dark stranger, idolized by a girl of only TWELVE years old. When her mother dies, he becomes her captor. In the novel, he manipulates her and coerces her to never tell anyone anything or she will be an orphan and go into the system. For a whole year while travelling he has sex with her every day despite her wishes, long after she has lost all interest for him. It becomes her duty, at the age of thirteen, while she would rather be out playing with children her age. In a particular scene, she cries after having sex with him, because he withdraws something he has promised her for her sexual favors. (He mentions that she cries every night, by the way.) She does not in any way own her sexuality. For her to get even the smallest things, she has to have sex with him. When she later receives money from him, it's her desperate attempt to gain back control over her own body, but it's still him that owns it. This is in no way a love story. Why not? Because (the test of love) Humbert does not ever care what is best for Dolores. He is in love with "Lolita," the fantasy, the nymphet who is solely an object for his desire, who he alone possesses, and he destroys this girl. This is the true story. In the book he even fantasizes about having a child with her, so he can have a "Lolita number two," who will soon be "eight or nine years old." In the movie they have made her more of a rebellious teenager and him less of a cold calculating predator, but the power balance is still the same.
