Simply one of the most underrated and slept-on entities in the 70's...haunting and powerful vocals...complexity and simplicity at the same time... #TIMELESS

The song Phoenix is about the mythical bird called Phoenix, back in the late 80's I did a lot of research to find out what the song's about.Nona has one hell of a imagination, you have to have one to write brilliant lyrics like that. This album wasn't as successful as Nightbirds, but a good album still.Labelle was a great girl group to say the least.

depth and uncoventional chord progressions and movements. Now at age 20 I understand what I wrote off as oversinging and pretentious unmelodious music. Late at night When listening to Labelle's Phoenix or Chameleon albums with candles lit I feel Patti's idiosyncratic histrionics ... Nona's stern expansive vocal restraint... and Sarah's bright and strident bird call. These women were bad as hell and their vocals fucking scary/haunting at times... they way the all harmonize with such power...

I remember when first getting into Labelle's music (besides their commercial hit Lady Marmalade) I had trouble understanding their music and I wrote them off. But after getting into Nona Hendryx I began to understand the unconventionality of her writing. Here I was as a young kid someone who thought The Supremes were the standard for how a female group should sound. No to slight Motown artistry but I believe the commercial/conventional sound of 1960s Motown deprived me of understanding lyrical..

I felt badly after I re-read your note. In my exuberance, I realized, I'm not a Facebook member. I really don't want to be, but I'll think about it. Even though, people of all ages utilize the medium, I feel like i? I belong to 2 R&B blog sites and the news came in one this week's newsletter .

My pleasure. I want to make sure Nona's music is not forgotten.
