The Hultsfred Festival (Hultsfredsfestivalen in Swedish) is an annual music festival held in Hultsfred, Sweden. It takes place at the lake Hulingen during three days in the middle of June, from Thursday to Saturday. Since the first festival in 1986, its attendance has increased from 7,500 visitors to approximately 32,000 people in 2005.

With its five different stages, the Hultsfred Festival hosts a large number of bands per year (154 in 2007) from all over Scandinavia and the world alike.

Performing on the first day of the three-day Hultsfred Festival 2004 would have been a daunting task for any musician. Apart from Kris Kristofferson, the first day also featured The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Meshuggah, Bright Eyes and The Roots. A formidable lineup.

Kritstofferson fan, Teishi, posted this note on the net: "The Summer of 2004, I'm front row at the Kris Kristofferson show on Hultsfred in Sweden and, all of a sudden, I hear a song I don't recognize amidst all the classic gems. A few days later, the friend I attended with tells me he's just downloaded the song - In The News - and we soon realise there's a new album in the works. For two years I await it anxiously. And then it's there." The song would appear on Kristofferson's 2006 album, This Old Road.

According to reports, at Hultsfred 2004, The Pixies blew many people away, especially with their by-now classic alternative rock tracks such as This Monkey's Gone To Heaven, Where Is My Mind and Debaser. And then you have Kris Kristofferson. Now that Johnny Cash is no longer around, this Highwayman seems to be picking up the slack singing for the downtrodden. With only his guitar and harmonica, he put on a show that's passionately forceful. Affable and heartfelt ("If you see any of my relatives, tell 'em I wasn't as drunk as I was the last time I was here"), the crowd couldn't agree more.

Ok, on to some "thinking man's" country, or rather, some "working man's" Dylan.

Kristofferson is a living legend, a man who can put more story, power and emotion into a 3 minute song than most novelists can put into 300 pages. This set is an intimate, low-key, acoustic affair. Just Kris, an acoustic guitar and those lyrics....ahhh man, those lyrics. Really hard say to much about this other than Kristofferson is on, the crowd is great, and it's killer. It's just something you need to listen to....especially on this Sunday morning coming down.
