Recorded At: Sounds Interchange, Toronto Canada

Recording Period: November 1977 to May 1978 (mixed in early June 1978)

Initial Release Date: August 1978 ("Sir Army Suit" album)

Remarks:

From Klaatu's inception in January 1973 and continuing on through May 1977, one important factor in making possible the production of the group's recordings had been access to studio time at Toronto Sound Studios made available by producer Terry Brown (who was then part-owner of that studio). But by the autumn of 1977, TSS had ceased operations and was in the process of being dissolved. When recording of Klaatu's third album ("Sir Army Suit") got underway in November 1977, the group was booked into another of Toronto's leading studios, Sounds Interchange, under the pseudonym "The Plastic Mosquitoes".

The first song recorded by Klaatu at Sounds Interchange was "Dear Christine". The basic rhythm section (consisting of piano, electric guitar, and drums) was recorded "live" off the floor on November 28, 1977 with Terry Brown producing and Mike Jones engineering. (The "distorted" electric guitar track recorded on that first session was subsequently replaced with a "clean" electric 12-string guitar.)

The sound of a Bosun's whistle which appears briefly midway through this track was provided courtesy of Frank Davies, who was then president of Daffodil Records (the record label that released Klaatu's recordings in Canada at the time).

I'll be coming up on 35 in about a month. My father loved Klaatu and this was one of his favorite songs around the time of my birth. He (like many others in the late 70's-early 80's) was in a band. He was away a whole lot through his relationship/marriage with my mom. He insisted on naming me after the song "Dear Christine"

The years have gone quickly, and I am older, but this song forever remains young and a statement of hope. Love this song and Klaatu since the 70's.

Wow ! Been a long time since I heard this group and the rumor that it was really members of the Beatles expressing their feelings. Whatever. Just loved hearing this group again. God bless.

I was there too. It was AWESOME! I later got the band members to sign photos of that concert when they played at the Hard Rock Cafe on Yonge Street. From a sold out Theatre to a bar! SAD. But I got to see them close up then!

This is a very nice song. I vaguely remember hearing it long ago. I'm glad ReStart put it up. You don't hear music like that anymore these days, so that's a treat.

I haven't heard Dear Christine since I was a teen in the 70s. The beauty and love in this song haven't changed in 30 years. Thank you for posting it.
