I think they made Mark use a ROCKMAN by Tom Scholtz. The amp is the size of a sandwich, and is only for practice. This is one of the worst amps in the world to record with!!! The guitar sounds horrible!!!

I guess is funny when Paul and Gene says that Mark st. John was not a great guitarist due the fact he didn't play the same thing twice or something.. Paul and Gene are not that kind of musicians able to say something like this about any one else! Paul is a great vocalist and frontman and even a songwriter, but sleeps miles away from the guitars... You can feel it and see it clearly on the Animalize live DVD, when Paul plays his solo. You know, I am huge fan of Kiss anyways, but Mark made the Animalize album sound better than any other of 80's Kiss era, of course, except by the the classic CREATURES OF THE NIGHT, and the HUGE work of Vinnie Vincent among lots of great musicians on that record! Maybe they didn't like Mark too much because he pushed Kiss sonority into another direction or even in a personal level... But I don't think is fair saying things like that, especially because he is not between us anymore! #fail!

I just picked up the latest issue of Guitar World and they have a huge interview with Paul and Gene, with regards to being in the Hall of Fame and talking about past members. They both say that Mark St. John was the least talented musician they have ever had in the line-up. Paul ask him to write the solo for a track one night and the next day he played it. Paul thought it was a good start and ask him to play it again. Mark St. John replied "I can't" He could not play something twice the same way, because he has no structure, no discipline. He's just notes with no musical content. Paul said " you need to go home and listen to Clapton, Page etc." And Mark replied, "I can play faster than those guys". Right there, Paul knew he was finished.

I really hate to say this, especially since my best high school friend has passed. But I agree with Kale Baldwin. When Mark and I had our band Jaborwocky in high school, we played heavy Deep Purple (in Rock, Fireball), Jeff Beck Group, PFM, Gentle Giant, ELP, Captain Beyond, Stray Dog. Not One KISS tune! We all considered them a joke. We were into Queen, Zep, Deep Purple (bands with talent). I played with Vinnie Vincent, but was not a close friend of his like Mark Norton. Mark was going to use this band as a stepping stone, but got problems with his hands and couldn’t do the gig. Sorry it messed up his mind for live.

Mark was a great guitar player and the stuff he did on Animalize kicked much ass, but in the long run, he didn't fit, just like Vinnie didn't fit.Sure, the both of them sounded great on the albums they were on, but live was another story.
