Liping and I are at season 4 episode 3 in Downton Abbey, and this woman sang in that episode, playing the part of Dame Nellie Melba. She sang part of this piece.

One of the best performances of this aria. I love Kiri te Kanawa's performance of Rakhmaninov's Vocalise. Great.

Contrary to popular belief, O mio babbino caro is not as tragic an aria as many people think it is. Really, Loretta (The character who sings this) is a teenage girl trying to persuade her father. So in fact she does not mean most of what she sings, she is just trying to get her way. It's like a modern day teenager saying "If I don't get a new iPhone I am gonna kill myself"
