Lyrics (English translation)

Far and wide in all countries

As far as Paris or Rome

There are poor people

They don't cry, they don't beg

They just bear it

Those people are singing

Even if they are sleeping hungry

That's the way it is

Everyday

Stop it with the empty words

Don't cry about your state

You don't know real poverty

Look at those people

They don't cry, they don't beg

Those people are singing

Even if they are sleeping hungry

Completely stop

Thinking about yourself

You should know

About their life

Know them and don't stay away

Don't alienate them

We can help them

Every day

For 16 years I didn't know what this song was. I had it recorded on a cassette, but thought the cassette was lost (I moved out a few years ago and decided the past belonged in a dumpster) until I found it today in a stray diskette case while cleaning out my computer cupboard. The recording (on a 16 year old tape that was unwound and damaged multiple times, from a badly tuned radio and far too quiet) took some serious Audacity restoration work, and even then Soundhound was the only service that managed to recognise it.Now my youth is complete. :'-)

I speak Zulu but some words and phrases here are familiar, which is amazing considering our two countries are thousands of miles apart.

This song makes me homesick for Africa. I served, there, incredible people who endured deep poverty and hardship. Yet they sang.
