The rousing Sabre Dance was first heard in a now rarely performed ballet called Gayaneh, but it has gained immortality thanks to its perennial inclusion on the soundtracks of films and TV commercials - including for Fuji Films. A sabre dance boogie was a dance band hit for Freddy Martin and His Orchestra in 1948 and a rock version of the piece, by the Welsh group Love Sculpture, was a top ten hit in 1968. Its composer, Aram Khachaturian, was a Russian Armenian who became professor at the Moscow Conservatory during the Stalin era. Sabre Dance apart, British audiences perhaps know Khachaturian best for the ballet Spartacus, the 'Adagio' from which the makers of TV's The Onedin Line took as the programme's theme tune and which is also featured on 'Classical Music - The 50 Greatest Tracks'.
