It was 69 and I had just joined the Royal Marines Band Service. Loved in then and still sing it if I get the chance>

The VA is just an inconvenience. War is needing medical care and having no money for it, like in the real world.

"And if I could move I'd get my gun and put'er in the ground"... I always assumed he meant the barrel of his gun in the ground, but maybe he wanted to put Ruby in the ground?

I came of age in 1969 and this song was EVERYWHERE. Definitely and unquestionably from 1969.

Johnny Cash introduced them as the First Edition, but the billing on the record was "Kenny Rogers & The First Edition." Never saw them live and never knew there was a female in the group. And another thing is that according to Billboard, it hit the charts in 1969, but I know for a fact that I didn't hear it played on my local stations until 1971.

@swlabr21 :) I can remember 50's tv and if it's any different now I would be surprised.I bet the only live BAND gigs are at those broadcasted from an actual venue rather than a tv studio. It takes a band about an hour minimum to set up and the tv guys won't "waste the time" probably, and as for live vocal - so what! We've got karaoke everywhere instead of music that's not a virtue. If you accept cheap well presented crap that's what they'll give you.

The vocals are live. The backing track is the record.

Great! Remember when the song was at the top of the charts but back then we only had 1 channel and never got to see Kenny sooooooo young... and Grandpa Jones. Too Cool!! Thanks! Garth

Note to Littlejohn: Kenny sang this live on the program. I was in the audience at the taping at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. I remember that he was singing live because they had to do three takes. Something to do with coming in wth the vocals at the right time. They sounded great live. Listen closely and you'll notice a few differences from the record.

I hate this miming crap there should be a rule that they have to play live no matter what the hassle for the tv people. There was a tv programme in the UK called the Old Grey Whistle Test and you didn't have to be famous to get on it but you had to, have potential, be good and be live. I saw Dire Straits on there before they had a hit.
