Overall a good show, with some glaring plot holes and repetitive flashbacks. The execution could have been much better but I give praise to it for a more original content, and some really good dialogues by the main female protagonist (which doesn't happen very often in the anime industry apparently; the only other really great heroine I can think of is Balsa from Seirei no Moribito - which you should watch too if you enjoyed this one), and of course the music. I didn't think I would like some of the songs playing midway, but I ended up singing to a couple of them too. So they actually felt very in place by the end.

Oh and for people who loved this anime: watch Guin Saga. It's very similar in terms of feel, music and atmosphere. The only difference is there's more action/fighting, but it's not over powering. That said, I prefer Kemono no souja way more, but guin saga is still amazing. One of the few book to anime productions that came out well
