We are proud to announce the return of Kelley Polar to the Environ catalog for his first release of original material since 2008's critically-acclaimed I Need You to Hold On While the Sky Is Falling. Recorded in Walden-esque seclusion somewhere off the beaten path in New Hampshire, this two-track release marks a return to popular form, picking up many of the stylistic and lyrical preoccupations of earlier releases, while continuing their characteristically intrepid exploration of the possibilities and consequences of electrofied pop.

"I'm Not What You Want" begins in classically held territory, before briskly running off with the beat into a tangle of cleverly composed synthetics and bittersweet lyrics (provided and performed by Jeremy Greenspan of the Junior Boys). The song weaves a sheer tapestry of pop perfection and subtle surprise, alternating taut verses with the lustrous chorus and probing recapitulations of the classical intro. The deceptive simplicity of Polar's composition flawlessly accompanies Greenspan's understated delivery, making the title track both immediately arresting and perpetually engaging.

Up next, "Nocturne" confidently walks the fine line between anticipation and suspense. The bassline, ambling back and forth beneath Polar's love-torn duet with Finnish songstress Emilia Lagk of Dinosauruxia, accurately translates the song's conflicted message, while startlingly delicate synth work moves the listener just up to the cusp of some resolution beyond reach.

While recent work demanded he play a supporting role—producing strings for Javiera Mena, Isla de los Estados, and the Junior Boys' upcoming album, amongst other things—"I'm Not What You Want" showcases Polar's songwriting and production in superlative form, leading us to speculate wildly (and happily) about an album coming together somewhere in the woods.
