a white woman singing 'Strange Fruit'. what an insult, jeez, billie and nina would be spinning in their graves. this was truly awful, love blake but Katey's voice does the song no justice whatsoever. ewhhhh

I said the same thing about Beth Hart, and I will say it here to despite how much I respect Katey Sagal's acting chops:"Something just feels off about this performance. She has a beautiful and dynamic voice, but this song was not really meant to be sung by white people. It doesn't carry the same weight as when it was sung by Billie Holiday or Nina Simone or Diana Ross, and therefore cannot hope to evoke the same emotions that were present when originally crafted. This is not a song meant to be loved or be beautiful. This song is supposed to crush you and depress you, and she just does not have the background to pull it off."P.S.- Yes, a white Jewish man from New York wrote the poem that Billie Holiday sung, but she OWNED those words. He wrote those words about black people being lynched. The three women I listed had a direct understanding of that pain of loss and invoked it within the song. I hear none of that in this version, which is sad without any of the raw pain attached.
