@JonLynnHarvey In my opinion, there was no song before "Helter Skelter" that so clearly exhibited all the musical characteristics that we associate with modern-day heavy metal. And, yes, I shouldn't have said "single-handedly." One, because the rest of the band kind of helped him out with the composition of the music, per se, and two, because he was, of course, prompted to write "Helter Skelter" on a kind of musical dare that consisted in writing the loudest, dirtiest-sounding rock song.

I hadn't heard this piece. I'm pleasantly surprised to hear something this worthy from Paul McCartney. She seems to have owned it, although I haven't heard it by anyone else yet.

Great melody. Baffling, really, how a rock star with no musical training in terms of composition manages to create such outstanding melodies all the time... Yes, I say that he would need the training if he wanted to be considered as a serious composer, but I think this isn't a bad place to start for the guy who single-handedly invented heavy metal.
