I think that her "skeleton" is really just a reference to her inner self, her truest self - the part of her that bears emotions and characteristics that make her innately strange. She would rather keep that hidden from others (or sometimes even "smash" out altogether). But she realizes that despite the difficulty of being a highly unique and sensitive adult, she could never give up what makes her so different because it's so central to her being (which is why "skeleton" is such a great metaphor here). Love you Kate <3

I have done no research (just listened to the son about thirty million times) but I always have thought that it was about an imaginary friend. I mean why would it be easy when she was seven but not when she's 22. Also only douchebags tease someone who's friends with someone with am eating disorder.

my psychiatrist used to use " unwanted skeleton" as a reference to my mothers schizophrenia. because skeletons are 'scary', as is those voices. I have always thought of that when I heard this song.
