Kate performs "Egypt" on the 1979 Christmas special.

Lyrics:

Follow the Nile

Deep to much deeper.

The Pyramids sound lonely tonight.

The sands run red

In lands of the Pharoahs.

Their symmetry gets right inside me.

I cannot stop to comfort them.

I'm busy chasing up my demon.

I cannot stop to comfort them.

I'm busy chasing up my demon.

Oh, I'm in love

With Egypt.

My Pussy Queen

Knows all my secrets.

I'll never fall in love again.

I drift with dunes.

I whisper of the tombs.

They offer me Egyptian delights.

She's got me with that feline guise,

Got me in those desert eyes.

She's got me with that feline guise,

Got me in those desert eyes.

Oh I'm in love

With Egypt.

I wonder if anybody would have been able to perform such a live performance today? Sadly people today are so backwards they are jumping to all kinds of conclusions when the message is clear to anybody with a sane mind, and at the same time ignoring lyrics and performances that really should offend them.I think most of Kate's early work is underrated and really is an insight into the mind of a young, brilliant woman who dared doing things her own way. The raw energy in her early albums really sets them out. I hope she releases a dvd/bluray of this 1979 Xmas Special.

@bacholerno2 I know this is an old comment, but I liked your analogy of the song... I like how you described it as an Egypt fangirl. Made me giggle, but it makes sense!

@willshakespeare2007 kate's cotumes/ dancing/ videos were really important and were relevant to her songs. the black strip across her nose represents the sphinx, she's singing as someone who is in love with egypt and only sees it for its treasures and neglects to realise all the poverty and suffering there. it's like she's a fangirl who can't see past her own nose... metaphorically ;p

I think Kate covered her nose wearing a hair-band to emulate the sphinx's look, since it hasn't its nose.

I got your joke, and agree, but what can you do ?? Apart from editing it in a Video Package !! BTW, I've just come off my son's electric drum kit playing to this - it's awesome (I waited 30 years and for technology to come along to make me sound professional !!). She was a child genius

@Symphonyofflowers Sorry I was just making a rather silly joke as it is not the best bit of costume design I have seen. She carries it off well but honestly what was the designer thinking? Take an incredibly beautiful women and rap some tights round her face.

No, it's not a bandage. I guess it's supposed to represent a veil. Remember, the song is about Egypt.
