More a forgery than a cover; try the Suzanne Vega original - don't argue.

The YouTube context complicates the discussion about the covering of the original song, musically, since we have a video to see. Covers can be delicate matters of musical and visual intent. Kasey did a fine job on a very challenging cover, of this classic, as interpreted with her musical style and wonderfully interesting voice. The arrangement still keeps relatively true to the original. The use of the many guitar harmonic effects honor the 1987 version arrangement (maybe unintentionally) with a different instrument. I can understand people not enjoying this cover if they don't like Kasey's style. She maintains the seriousness of the subject matter and possibly adds more obvious visual metaphor (blind man) for those not listening closely.I was not a fan of the original 80's version. It had a darker tone (especially given the coloring of the final video print) which may have been the point, but was musically less interesting. Kasey has a stronger presence of delivery in this video compared to Vega's original. If I were the producer, I'd have cut the camera shots of Kasey's shoes and leg tights (though she looks great). They distract from the theme, IMO. This could be an attempt to freshen the visuals without trying to reinvent the original concept (again, it is a cover). Otherwise, Kasey's answer-seeking and semi-disgusted expressions keep the production serious, especially in the closing shot. Well done.I'd like to hear Joan Osborne take a crack at this one.

The original was called "Luka" and it was about violence against children. But you otherwise got it right.

" A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in front of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child—in real life I don't thi

@illusionsfan1 Obviously this is only my interpretation I could be entirely wrong but I believe he's not actually "Luka" (which I assume is how you've interpreted the clip)

@johnbonnell I believe the blind man is more a symbolism of those who sort of merely see but do nothing about abusive cases whether it's because they can't or because they choose not too. The kids toys are most likely more the evidence of something has happened so the blind man touching this is actually sort of "seeing" this evidence yet he's not (in his case it's cause he actually CAN'T see it) but in most everyday circumstances it's because "we" choose NOT to. If that makes sense?
