A song written by Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh

Artist: Kansas

Album: Point Of Know Return

Year: 1977

Lyrics:

He had a thousand ideas, you might have heard his name

He lived alone with his vision

Not looking for fortune or fame

Never said too much to speak of

He was off on another plane

The words that he said were a mystery

Nobody's sure he was sane

But he knew, he knew more than me or you

No one could see his view, Oh where was he going to

He was in search of an answer

The nature of what we are

He was trying to do it a new way

He was bright as a star

But nobody understood him

"His numbers are not the way"

He's lost in the deepest enigma

Which no one's unraveled today

But he knew, he knew more than me or you

No one could see his view, Oh where was he going to

And he tried, but before he could tell us he died

When he left us the people cried,

Oh where was he going to?

He had a different idea

A glimpse of the master plan

He could see into the future

A true visionary man

But there's something he never told us

It died when he went away

If only he could have been with us

No telling what he might say

But he knew, he knew more than me or you

No one could see his view

Oh, where was he going to

But he knew, you could tell by the picture he drew

It was totally something new,

Oh where was he going to?

Phil Ehart never gets his due as drummer for this band...he was a perfect fit. His fills and drum sound was amazing. Is there a better snare crack than on Leftoverture? The depth of lyrics and concepts was such a cry from mindless pop music. Kerry Livgreen has a 160 IQ. This was the day when bands were all about digging deep inside and the corporate structure was out of the studio...when bands built from the ground up over years touring in dingy bars and small venues in a van. You paid your dues which weeded out those who were not in this for the long haul.

I know a woman that went to high school with Kansas violinist Robbie Steinhart. She told me that he was second chair violinist. Then she smiled and said "I was first chair".

I had read some time ago this song was written about Albert Einstein. Lyrics fit, but they fit for many people.

These guys were from Kansas and had no influences except Wilson Pickett and a few other black artists so these songs were fresh and new! I think Kerry Livegren and Steve Walsh were two of the greatest songwriters ever!!

Oh dig it! I would go to high school and day dream about this record waiting until I could come home and listen to this album some more! It completely ROCKED my world! It was album of the year. I just discovered the writing of H.P. Lovecraft! ..and then STAR WARS came out about the time I got this album… my whole world changed ! Awesome!

The "Paradox" tune does sound alot like it was about "Nostradamus". But then again, "Jesus Christ" was also a supernatural visionary, and "God incarnate" as well.
