A song written by Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren

Artist: Kansas

Album: Masque

Year: 1975

Lyrics:

Well I'm trying to tell you about a thing I thought I saw

It came to me in a dream one night

When a voice began to call

I heard my name being summoned as I looked around to see

A hooded judge and jury

There was no mercy there for me

Well I can't make it, I just can't figure it out

This dream is drivin' me crazy

I gotta know what it's all about

The mark is upon me, and the mark of Cain brings fear

A cold wind's blowin' right down my back

I'm runnin, I'm runnin' from a figure that's dressed in black

I think my legs are made out of lead

Cause I'm runnin' but I'm going nowhere

The bad dream is coming closer and closer

I got a feelin' he'll always be there

Forever is a long time to spend in agony

And the demons of confusion have got a place for me

The mark is upon me, and the mark of Cain brings fear

I was tired, so tired of runnin'

I had to turn and look around

I saw eyes that looked right through me

And a voice that made no sound

My body froze and I stood and stared, unearthly face before me

From the depths of a hooded nightmare, I saw what could not be

Mysteries and mayhem from the pinnacle I see

There's no answer when there's no question

The mark of Cain bears hard on me

Burn Notice

@Garrett Winters and @ Gizoughte. you are right, this is part of The Pinnacle. The song as recorded as one song. The record company didn't like a song that was awesome and almost 14 minutes long.. So to get air play, the song was truncated into two songs. They fit together beautifully.

How do you tell what time signature music is, from listening to it? I don't know much about music, but I know that 15/8 is pretty darn good!

Hell yeah, 15/8 I don't hear or see often, although I do listen to alot of Rush, King Crimson, and Yes.... but that's badass; I know a Dream Theater song that has 11/8 in it.

Exactly brother!! I went to see Kansas in 75 to see if the could pull off doing this stuff live, and my word did they!! I thought Steve W. was gonna bounce right off his seat into the lights when they did this. I'm more of a simple rock lover but this was on my turntable quite a bit. When I learned Carry On it forced me to use all 4 fingers and it helped change the way I played. Kerry wore a shuny turquoise suit with a guitar to match, Steve in some gym trunks and a tank top. Stellar musicians!

I wish the record company didn't split up the original version of "The Pinnacle". It was originally a 14-minute epic, and this was a part of it

Only your humble opinion, mate. Kansas' works applies only to people with an IQ above 90.

Saw Kansas 6 times......unsurpassed in timing, melodies and arrangements. Most don't even understand half the words in their songs, let alone the meanings.

I've noticed that this great song has some similarities with Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast: both have a 10/8 time signature, a bad dream subject, they last for about 4 minutes and they are totally awesome, of course. Does anyone agree?

Never Alone

This reminds me of a dream I had once...
