Just listen to these dual guitars! It was one of Kansas' hallmarks that made up their original sound. And despite still being a great live act, this feature is sorely missed nowadays. What you're hearing here is a fresh mix I did of the well-known Canada Jam performance that emphasizes the interaction going on between Kerry and Rich on guitar. And since it's youtube there's a video as well. (Who can guess the movie I used for the Steve character?)

Lonely Street is one of the very few Blues songs by Kansas. The liner notes on the album state it was written by all band members (sans Livgren and Steinhardt), and as such it could be an early White Clover song. During the live shows however Robby often mentioned the song was written by Steve Walsh. An early name of it was Hard Times and it was also called 11/8 due to the time signature.

I need to hear this song live!!!!! I wonder is Steve can still pull off these vocals?? I'm sure Rags could handle some dual lead roles with Rich Williams! This is one of my favorite deep track Kansas songs!!

Thank you for having me :o)Blues/Rock gives one a bit of a wider angle then just the blues, and since I'm all in for wide angles; why not start with some Progrock? ;o)

Also, 11/8 means there are 11 beats in each measure, and the 1/8th note gets each one of those 11 beats per measure. Just FYI.

Incommudro, according to Kerry is a made up word that came to him in a dream. He talks about it in his Seeds of Change book. Also, was this song edited? I hear repeats of riffs and a chorus effect on the guitars that is NOT on the original live recording. What's up?

TRUE.....this is NOT from the Canada Jam show. Linnea is absolutely correct. I am nauseatinly familiar with EVERY live version of this song, as it is one of if not the MOST Balls to the wall vox perf that Walsh ever did live! I LOVE the version from N.Y City in late 74 early 75. The part when Walsh screams "Word-was a-comin-down" REALLY high like a banshee scream just makes my hair stand up. This was the show when Kerry says Bhuddism is the #1 sport in Kansas before they do Incommudro.

Something to note, when not tied down by violin duties, Dave Rags is able to provide a second guitar when they are playing live. So a song like this with minimal to no violin, it could be done and it sound like Kansas of old. Saw them this last Friday and his second guitar is a welcome to songs like Carry On and others where he is not totally tied down by the violin. That is something they didn't have post Kerry & Steve Morse and when Robbie was back with them.

No problem Rick, the one I know for sure is when he says it on the Broadcast of Innocence (pennsylvania 76) one, after the song is finished.

I like how you double the guitars(that's why I asked about the iso mix) and took advantage of the guitars being in separate channels to get that single, almost dead sound on one guitar or the other. Keep on pumping these out bro! let me know if you need anything.

Thanks Linnea! Let me know when you come across whichever version that Robby says that on. I'm not doubting you, it's just that I missed it before and I want to go back and hear it (I mean really hear it!) this time. My mind wanders sometimes!

Linnea Skoglund

Well Robby says it in some live recordings "Lonely Street - Hard Times"

I love how you match up existing footage with parts in the song. It sounds like you added some sort of processing to the guitars? Did you take advantage of my "Guitars Only" iso mix of this song? Where did you hear that it was called "Hard Times"? You gave me a good idea to try something. I'll get back to you if I find anything out about the Kirshner tape. It's certainly possible that this was a song on it. The weird thing is I've talked to the guy who mixed the demo tape and he can't remember!

Thanks for reminding me Rick, updated the description. But what do you think, could this have been one of the songs on the Kirshner tape?
