Beautiful. Compare his attack on the opening "Om" to Tito Schipa's; no trace of any upward swoop and a wonderful open throat, relaxed larynx on "fu". Wonderfully moderated vibrato sustained throughout the piece; this man had some muscle. And the legato is also sustained; it's easy for the singer and the orchestra - because they are aligned rhythmically I suppose - to start plodding. Mr Bjorling resists this entirely. Again, compare the Scipa version. This is simply musical throughout. Who said Scandinavians have no passion?

Great as ever Jussi. Pity the piano was too near the mike.

I was not only living but heard him at age 18 in Chicago! An advantage of being 73 years old now and hearing most of the greatest tenors of the 50'S, 60'S,70'S and beyond too this day, but the best ones are gone.

He gets everything out of every note!! Most singers doing what he does would make you feel like this piece boringly lasts forever but Jussi makes it something that you don't ever want to end.

This is my favorite opera recording and one of the most beautiful pieces of music/musical performance ever accomplished. I have nothing to add beyond that in terms of its quality. But my question is technical: What is that sound at 2:31? Someone coughing? Someone in the audience saying something? If so, what? Who? It drives me crazy. Listen closely and you'll hear it.

Stage fright is something that can be overcome, isn't it? Anyway, you're right about the young Pav (Pavarotti) ... and this version (with piano, only) rivals the great black-and-white video of an earlier master - Beniamino Gigli. Wunderlich's version is almost too-smooth ... but Jussi B uses the diaphragm and HEART, as he alway did, to an ineradicable result. Easy to say, also. that - there'll never be another one, like him. Opinions only.

From my youngest age I alway's considered Jussi Bjorling the singer with the best voice in the Worlld and it would take a lot to make me change my mind. Wonderful singing indeed.
