"As for fortune, and as for fame I never invited them inThough it seemed to the world they were all I desiredThey are illusions, they're not the solutions they promised to beThe answer was here all the time"Eva Perón became a legendary figure in Argentine politics. A skilled speaker, she was adored by the poor citizens she worked hard to help, but she was not without critics and detractors. Asked to run as vice president with her husband in 1951, she faced opposition by the army. Perón ultimately turned down the post—possibly due to the health issues she was battling around this same time, stemming from cervical cancer.Covington refused to promote the song, not even appearing on Top Of The Pops. Tim Rice recalled in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh: "When the single began to show signs of being a hit, she got less and less interested in the project. She began to back away from it and began to feel it was a fascist plot, that we were exploiting the workers. I'm exaggerating a bit but she definitely disapproved of the success of 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina'."The song was never performed live on British music show Top of the Pops as might have been anticipated, as Covington refused to do so without the full symphonic orchestra. However, during the week that it was number one, she appeared in the audience. When Covington chose not to reprise the role in the 1978 stage musical, Elaine Paige was cast as Eva in the London production. In the United States, the song is also closely linked with Patti LuPone, who performed the role of Eva in the original Broadway production of the show.During the 1982 Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina, the song was sometimes played sarcastically by British regimental bands as they deployed to the Falklands. At the same time the Covington recording was banned from play on the BBC.The song was also banned in the Philippines during the dictatorship (1972–86) of President Ferdinand Marcos. The life of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, Marcos' wife, is similar to that of Evita PeronSource. Wikipedia and Songfacts.com#argentina#juliecovington#evaperon

This is definitely the best recording of this song. Her voice is so clear & strong. I remember watching The Rock Follies & have the CD. I don't get tired of listening to it either.

I was 15 when I first heard this song in my peaceful far away country. We weren't taught what was going on in Argentina at High School at the time but this song went to my bone marrow, so hauntingly telling of something monumental that happened somewhere not where near me that was hurting this woman and the people she was singing to. The orchestra and the production of this song is deep and perfect

In 1977 I was 9 years old and this was one of the first records I ever bought. To me there will never be a better rendition of this beautiful song. The purity of Julie's vocals has and never will be surpassed. Madonna can only dream...

This exquisite version - the definitive one IMHO - really shows up how Madonna needed every trick in the studio engineer's book to have her thin, reedy, nasal honk make anything like a go of this song. And I bet ol' Madge never sang this live (pretending to sing it whilst being flung across the stage upside-down without interrupting pretend fellatio on half a dozen dancers in turn doesn't count...). Presumaby the song not being conducive to Madonna's on-stage preferences of simulated sex /variety wanking /those vein-straining spasms she pleases to call dancing is the entire reason for its non-performance, and nothing to do with how everyone knows it would expose her vocal limitations.
