I was only five when this had a lot of air play in 1977 (and was on the jukebox in my father's restaurant). As a kid, I thought the singer of the song was sad because she missed seeing the circus, and when she sang "Well, maybe next year," she was comforting herself with the thought that the circus would be in town next year. :-)

Now I'm a big fan of Judy Collins. And this song has a lovely tune, and she sings it so beautifully. It comes across as very sentimental too. However, IMAO, I must say that whoever wrote this song could have thought of a better subject for her to sing about than about CLOWNS. Somehow clowns are just not sentimental or romantic or anything related to any kind of feeling that this song obviously was meant to give its listeners. When I was a little kid first hearing this song on the radio, I had thought that the title of it was "WHERE ARE THE CLOUDS?" And somehow in my tender mind back then, that title would have made much more sense and would have fitted much better with this song. Music is just something you just don't CLOWN around with. Pardon the pun!

I seem to come back to the great songs and performers of the sixties and seventies."Send in the Clowns" by Judy Collins is one of my favorites. It's true that these songs tell emotional stories. Stories that are part of each one's life. I'll always love to listen to Judy.

Is it me or does the "sound" of this song just come off as VERY sad...?

When I was a teenager in the 70's, I grew up in a dysfunctional family that ended in divorce. I hated it all. But now looking back as a 50+ year old man, What a great time with the best music every made! How time flies? Harley
