I would say Journey is more loved by many fans worldwide, their popularity and contribution to the Music industry is undeniable...comparing EVH and Neal Schon, I would always go with Neal Schon, listen to all their songs, the guitar solos are just so melodic and soulful, what about EVH, I know Van Halen is famous also but they're not considered icons or legend IMO....EVH can play real fast no argument about that, but there should be no argument also that Neal Schon can play fast too at the same time that he plays fast, those melodic and soulful guitar solos are just phenomenal..and that's why Journey became ICONIC, end of discussion, people...

Second favorite guitarist after Luke (Steve Lukather of Toto) Ironically, they have both said in interviews they love each other's work!Yes, Neal was playing with Santana at age 15!

I love EVH, but back at that time, Neal would've shredded him right in half. No question about it!!!

"Look Into the Future" and "In the Morning Day" had some amazing guitar, too.

I always describe "Karma" as "Neil wrote a Jimi Hendrix song".

this was 1980, everybody was abusing their Floyds.. it is laughable today.. Neil was a very tasty player even back then, he coulda tried harder

They were a progressive rock band before the pop fame of their Infinity album. Most of the musicans that came from that style would naturally blow away most people because they played their instruments with more detail and skill. So chance are Neal was either doing it before Van Halen or around the same time by coincidince. Look at Randy Rhoads or Marty Friedman. Randy was teaching Ozzy. And Marty is such a beast he had an album out with Hawaii when Metallica was putting out No Life till Leather

Neal is best when he concentrates on melody. There's nothing really innovative here. Just cramming as many notes as you can together. He should have taken some time and put a nice piece together incorporating melody and phrasing. I agree with what another poster wrote, he's trying to be EVH.

to be accurate, it is probably Eddie that copied Neal. I love both and both are great but take this into account..Neal did in fact contribute to the invention of the Floyd Rose tremolo, and Eddie toured opening for Neal in the very beginning. Listen to the EARLY Journey. You can hear a LOT of work that sounds like a lot of guys who came later. Satriani who grew up in and around Neal's stomping grounds included!! The bummer with EDdie is he has rarely ever aknowledged any if his influences.

Dumb metalheads like Brian May? Myself, i don't like much Van Halen, but many of the greatest guitar leyends give a lot of credit to him.

"Only for dumb metalheads." You're referring to the stereotypical young Metal player who uses tapping ad nauseam as an easy avenue to sound fast, as opposed to picking all, or most of the notes (alternate-picking), like world level speedsters do. Some of the more skilled "metalheads" have spent endless hours perusing Fusion players like Di Meola and McLaughlin, and even strait-up Jazzers like George Benson.

Im gonna jump in here real quick. Why would you make such a shallow ignorant statement. In 50 characters or less explain why you would make such a blatant comment ......do it now. "His playing is awful" Im blown away. Maybe check out some of Eds isolated guitar tracks. Just off the top of my head check out a song like "Dirty Movies" fuck Eds leads, his rhythyms are mind blowing. Talk about flow and technique, Claptons a second best when it comes to Eds frethand and picking hand.

Ladies & Gentlemen...The closest thing we have to Jimmy Hendrix IS Neal Schon in sytle and through their own lives.

Neal is obviously doing his EVH imitation here. A bit sad, but that was how influential EVH was in 1980.

I hope George Lynch paid Neal Royalties for what he did at the 1:37 mark. I think Lynche stole it for the "Paris is Burning" solo...
